Getting better skills

How Do I Get Better Skills for Netball?

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been playing netball for years, there’s always room to level up your skills. Netball is a fast-paced, high-energy sport that demands teamwork, agility, accuracy, and strategy. So, how do you get better? Here’s a breakdown of practical ways to boost your game.

1.

Master the Basics First

Before you go for the flashy moves, make sure your fundamentals are rock solid. This includes:

  • Passing: Practice chest passes, shoulder passes, and bounce passes with a partner or against a wall.

  • Footwork: Learn to pivot properly and land safely—this prevents injuries and keeps you quick on your feet.

  • Shooting: If you’re a shooter, repeat your shots from different angles and distances.

2.

Work on Your Fitness

Netball requires bursts of speed, sharp changes of direction, and stamina.

  • Agility drills (ladder runs, cone work)

  • Cardio (interval sprints, skipping)

  • Strength training (especially core and leg strength)

The fitter you are, the longer and harder you can play without losing focus or form.

3.

Watch and Learn

Watch high-level netball games—whether it’s Super Netball, the Netball World Cup, or local league games. Pay attention to:

  • Player positioning

  • Team strategies

  • Defensive techniques

It’s not just about watching the ball—see how players move off the ball too.

4.

Train With Purpose

Don’t just play for fun—train with a goal. Pick one skill to focus on each session. For example:

  • “Today I’m going to improve my timing for intercepts.”

  • “This week I’ll work on getting my passes quicker and more accurate.”

5.

Get Feedback

Ask your coach or teammates for feedback. Even better—record your games or training and review them. You’ll see habits or gaps you didn’t notice before.

6.

Play Different Positions

Even if you have a favorite position, trying out others helps you understand the game better and become more versatile. It also boosts your decision-making and court awareness.

7.

Consistency Is Key

The best way to improve? Keep showing up. Skill comes from repetition, effort, and consistency. Even 15 minutes a day of practice can make a huge difference over time.

8.

Mindset Matters

Stay positive, coachable, and open to learning. Mistakes happen—use them as fuel, not frustration. Celebrate your progress and don’t compare your journey to someone else’s.

Final Thoughts

Getting better at netball isn’t just about natural talent—it’s about how hard you’re willing to work. Train smart, stay hungry to improve, and always bring your passion to the court. You’ve got this.
