I’ve seen firsthand how focused practice on attacking techniques can boost confidence and performance on the court. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, these attacking netball drills are designed to help you move smarter, pass sharper, and score more consistently.

1. Not Cut The Cake Drill


This drill is fantastic for improving your speed and decision-making. It encourages players to pass quickly and then move into space to receive the ball again.


How to do it:


  • Form a small circle with 4-6 players.

  • One player (A) starts with the ball in the middle of the circle and passes to a teammate.

  • Immediately after passing, the player (A) runs to a new spot Player (B) within the circle. (Not next to or at the receiving player)

  • Player (B) then runs into the middle to receive a pass

  • Keep the pace fast and focus on crisp, accurate passes.


Why it works:

This drill simulates real game situations where you need to pass and move to avoid defenders. It builds stamina and sharpens your awareness of space.



2. Lead and Catch Drill


Leading into space is a key attacking skill. This drill helps players practice timing their runs and catching on the move.


How to do it:


  • Set up two lines about 10 meters apart.

  • One player stands in each line.

  • The player with the ball passes to the player in the opposite line, who leads forward to catch the ball.

  • The receiver then passes back to the original line and leads again.

  • Repeat for several rounds, then switch roles.


Tips:

Encourage players to use sharp, explosive movements and keep their eyes on the ball. Timing is everything here!




3. Shooting Under Pressure


Scoring is the ultimate goal of attacking play. This drill helps players practice shooting while being closely marked.


How to do it:


  • In groups of three, one attacker and one defender and a passer.

  • The attacker starts with the ball just outside the shooting circle

  • Passes to the attacker who does a preliminary move to receive the ball.

  • The defender applies light pressure, trying to block or distract.

  • The attacker works on quick footwork to receive a pass, turn to post and shoot.



Why it’s effective:

This drill builds confidence in shooting under pressure and improves composure during games.



How to Structure Your Netball Attacking Drills Clinic


Running a successful clinic means balancing skill development with fun and engagement. Here’s a simple structure I recommend:


  1. Warm-up (10 minutes):

Start with dynamic stretches and light jogging to get muscles ready.


  1. Skill Introduction (10 minutes):

Explain and demonstrate the drill clearly. Use simple language and show the correct technique.


  1. Drill Practice (30 minutes):

Break players into small groups and rotate through drills. Offer individual feedback and encouragement.


  1. Game Simulation (15 minutes):

Finish with a small-sided game focusing on applying attacking skills in real play.


  1. Cool Down and Review (5 minutes):

Stretch and discuss what players learned. Highlight improvements and set goals for next time.
